Overview
The rose is a perennial flowering shrub from the Rosa genus in the Rosaceae family. There are more than 100 wild rose species in existence, all of which originated in the northern hemisphere, in Asia, North America, Europe and northwestern Africa (mostly in temperate areas). Roses are highly popular flowers that are cultivated for both their sweet scent and radiant beauty.
Characteristics
Rose leaves tend to be between 2 and 6 inches in length. They are pinnate leaves and have basal stipules and leaflets. The margins of the leaflets are usually serrated. Most roses are deciduous, although some varieties that come from southeastern Asia are evergreen. Most roses have five petals, and tend to be pink or white. Some less common colors include yellow and red. There are five sepals underneath the petals.
Cultivation
Roses do exceptionally well when grown in climates that are temperate. Some roses (particularly Asian ones) also thrive in subtropical climates. They require daily direct sunlight (approximately six hours, preferable in the morning). Soils that are well-drained are ideal for rose cultivation. Roses should be watered about two times a week. It is recommended to avoid watering roses late at night, as it could encourage powdery mildew to develop.
Uses
Roses are popular for their attractive and fragrant flowers. They are cultivated as flowering and garden shrubs, and also as cut flowers. Some roses are also grown for their ornamental thorns or fragrant foliage, such as Rosa sericea and Rosa rubiginosa. Roses are also used to manufacture perfumes. Some species of roses produce rosehips, which are used for vitamin C (they can be eaten or used to make syrup).
Diseases and Pests
As with any type of plant, there are various diseases and pests that affect and can destroy roses. Some common rose afflictions include black spot, rust and powdery mildew. Some pests that could be bothersome or harmful to roses are Japanese beetles, aphids, moths and butterflies.
Varieties
Some popular varieties of roses include the floribunda, pernetiana, hybrid tea, hybrid musk, hybrid perpetual, Bourbon, Portland, polyantha, noisette, Provence, alba, Damask, Gallica, miniature, grandiflora and hybrid rugosa.
