Roses are flowering perennials of the genus Rosa. You can find more than 100 species of roses, and there are countless subspecies and cultivars. Rose flower is undeniably fragrant and beautiful, and its fragrance is also among the most popular flowers in the world. Their fragrance and the beauty that they are famous for is what makes these flowers so highly sought after in all parts of the world. Most of the rose species are native to Asia, with a few native to Europe, Northwest Africa and North America. Rose flower vary quite a bit in size.
The most popular color is red as those flowers symbolize love and passion. In ancient Greece, Egypt and Rome, they were associated with goddesses of love. Red roses are a favorite gift for Valentine’s Day and the flowers come in many different shades of red. You can find roses in other colors as well, such as: blues, whites, pinks and yellows (these flowers are often hybrid). Different cultivars have been developed to emphasize color, scent, shape, size and disease resistance, among many other attributes.
Fall foliage plays in integral and effortless role in our landscape's beauty during the season, but flowers can still provide colorful accents before the first snow flies. The same cool weather annuals we look for in the spring also flourish in the warm soil and cool air of autumn: Plant blooming sized pansies, violets, and calendula in your flowerbeds for a few more weeks of color.
Nothing says Halloween like our friend the pumpkin. From a decorative Jack-o’-Lanterns to tasty pies. Native to North American this versatile squash is used as food and recreation. For carving, pumpkin-chunkin (world record at over 4,000 ft.), pies, breads, muffins, pancakes and lattes, it sure gets around. Originating in Ireland and Scotland, carved pumpkins made their United States debut around 1866. They’ve been said to protect your home against the undead and ward off evil spirits. The world’s largest Jack-o’-Lantern weighed in at 1,469 pounds and was grown in Pennsylvania, not Transylvania. Just hack off the top, scoop out the inside flesh, carve out a scary face and put in a candle.  Now your front porch is ready to greet little ghosts and candy eating goblins on a moonlit chilly late October night.
I am certainly one to fill my house with seasonal decorations, and Halloween is no exception. Corn stalks, spiders and web. Pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn, too. Dahlias, sunflowers and hydrangeas. Oh! I get so excited just typing the words.
My home is an “autumn” home. Its red walls, warm woods and black furniture welcome the traditional Halloween look. A pumpkin hollowed out and filled with fiery colored flowers, rose hips, cattails and autumn leaves greets guests at the front door
Wool d├ęcor is big overseas, as seen at this year’s Christmasworld, the leading trade fair for festive decorations held annually in Frankfurt, Germany. Here in the United States, we are starting to embrace the warmth of the wool trend. As a floral design element, wool adds color, form and texture, creating a soft, cuddly, wooliness that makes us want to reach out and touch it. From wrapped vases to accents, wool is certainly a wonderful option for anyone asking their florist for “something different.”
Sweetest Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday in October, this year it’s Oct 19. I like to think of Sweetest Day as an appetizer to Halloween — treating my sweeties with flowers and candy. Here are gift suggestions to help you celebrate Sweetest Day:
My little niece loves wearing candy bracelets and putting flowers in her hair. For her Sweetest Day present, I would give her a candy bracelet tied to flowers or a single bright bloom with her favorite candy as a special treat.
